The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Dejan Kovacevic has the story about Ross resident, Robby Huerbin, just missing in a bid to join the U.S. Olympic luge and snowboarding teams:
Robby Huerbin of Ross Township was among USA Luge's top competitors through 2009, including a victory in his final qualifying run Nov. 6 in Park City, Utah, but a cumulative points system kept him off the team. And he knew it that day.

PittsburghLive.com ran an opinion piece today by former Ross Township commissioner Mark Purcell. In it, Purcell is highly critical of the current Ross township board of commissioners who are considering raising taxes.
With many residents living on fixed incomes and West View Water Authority passing on a substantial rate increase to its customers in 2010, it would be unconscionable to increase Ross residents' property taxes at this time.

The PittsburghChannel.com has the roundup about black ice conditions that caused a rash of fender benders this weekend in West View, Ross and other surrounding Pittsburgh Communities.
"It's kind of like, I would say, standing on a skating rink. It was really slippery," said Keith McCreary of McCreary Towing in West View to The PittsburghChannel. "A lot of black ice, literally, black ice. You didn't know it until you hit it."

An article on the Website SharonHerald.com, by Courtney L. Anderson, reports that the City of Sharon, Pa. has hired former Ross Manager Thomas D. Lavorini.
“Once we interviewed Tom we knew we had the person to lay the foundation for the city manager form of government,” Committee President Ed Palanski said to the SharonHerald.com. “When we met him, I think we all felt we had the guy.”
Lavorini was fired by the Ross Board of Commissioners by a vote of 5-3 on Aug. 25, 2008.
The embattled manager was often at odds with other commissioners and was previously suspended for an alleged act of insubordination, according to a previous article appearing on the Pittsburgh Tribune Review's Website first reported Aug. 26, 2008 on PittsburghLive.com.
The article on the SharonHeral.com does not mention the circumstances of Lavorini's departure from Ross Township Government. |

A recent story on PittsburghCatholic.org mentions Father John Naugle, a parochial vicar at St. Sebastian Church in Ross Township, as "an exceptional student" who faced "extraordinary odds" as one of several recipients that benefited from a now 20-year old "Extra Mile" program.
The goal of the program appears to be to provide financial resources for disadvantaged families so children could afford a faith-based education.
The article states that Fr. Naugle attended St. Agnes School and went on to attend Central Catholic High School where he graduated with honors. He was awarded the prestigious Wimmer Scholarship and went on to graduate summa cum laude from St. Vincent College, the article mentioned. The article also discusses other individuals who benefited from the program.
